Learning at home week 7-18/5/20 to 22/5/20

As promised here is a little surprise for you all!

We wanted to create something really special for everyone so we have made a video dedicated to all of YOU!

We might not see your faces every day anymore but we think of you all so much.

The lovely Miss Wilson has been busy collecting photos of all the lovely memories so far this year from all your teachers and has made a singing video as a tribute to every single one of you, we hope you enjoy it.

Love from

All the staff at Orchard Infants xxx

(We had so many lovely photos the song plays twice, there is a slight pause on the Pineapples slide then it continues)

PS, This brought tears to eyes because we miss you all so very much xx

We have another treat for you all too. At Orchard we are so lucky to have the amazing and kind Mrs Wright who looks after all our emotions and feelings. We love her so much, she doesn't just help the children she is also a huge support and comfort to all the staff at Orchard too.

We hope you enjoy her poem that she wrote especially for you ...

****************************HALF TERM ACTIVITIES***************************

Mrs Wojcik's Flower Hunt

Good Morning and Happy Friday, it is the end of this half term and we now have a weeks break where we can do all the things we love to do when we are taking time out and resting our minds and bodies.

All of the teachers and teaching assistants at school have been chatting about how much we all miss you, we miss your faces, your smiles and your laughter. I am sure you are missing all your friends too.

So, to put a smile on your faces we have a few surprises later, watch this space...

*********************************************************************************

Today's learning will be some Purple Mash 2dos.

Don't forget your stories are due in today too, we can't wait to read them.

Keep an eye out on the website later today, Miss Archer has created a poster full of fun ideas of things to do over half term and Mrs Wojcik has created a wonderful flower hunting activity.

Finally, we have a very special poem to finish the day from our lovely Mrs Wright... check back later to watch her read the poem to you.

Here are some maths problem to try today or over the half-term week. They require you to practice some of your multiplication facts. Don't try and solve them in your head, make sure you choose a strategy like using resources to help or draw the problem and your solution on paper.

Thursday 21st May 2020- Good Morning, we are almost at the end of another week AND it is almost half term!

All your Year 2 teachers are blown away by the creative stories you have uploaded for us, they have been incredible so far... if you haven't done one yet don't worry, you have until Friday. It is so lovely seeing your handwriting and reading your work again.

Today you will have the option to upload your phonics work to Purple Mash too, that way we can read it and leave you comments or voice clips about your work, how cool is that!

Remember, you can upload it as a document or just take a photo of your work on a phone and upload it that way.

Have a great day everyone.

Phonics - (also on Purple Mash)

Maths for Thursday 21.5.2020

Today we have a problem called 'Biscuit Decorations'

Think of an efficient way to help solve this problem such as using resources at home like Lego or you could even draw it in your book.

For the Teddy Bears' Picnic Andrew decorated 20 biscuits.

He lined them up and put green icing on every second biscuit.

Then he put a red cherry on every third biscuit.

Then he put a white chocolate button on every fourth biscuit.

So there was nothing on the first biscuit.

How many other biscuits had no decoration?

Did any biscuits get all three decorations?

What if...

1. He decorated 15 more biscuits to take to the picnic?

2. Every 6th biscuit was sprinkled with hundreds and thousands?

Wednesday 20th May 2020 - Good Morning! Today is a very special day because as well as being our mindful well-being day it is also....

                         WORLD BEE DAY.

The fabulous Miss Sidney from Pippins has created a really cool Bee activity for you all, but first, lets start our day with a singing assembly song. Bees are super important and help keep the world alive, how about this awesome song as a tribute to them...

What a Wonderful World

Tuesday 19th May 2020 - Good Morning and happy Tuesday.

Today we have created you a phonics and maths lesson and some 2do's on Purple Mash. Remember you have your story to write and upload for us to read as a weekly writing challenge. If you finish your story don't forget to edit it thinking about capital letters and full stops. You can draw pictures to go with your story too!

Have a wonderful day. :-)

We continue with our look again at multiplication today.

Monday 17th May 2020 - Good Morning!  Your thoughts and feelings on a Monday morning set you up for the week, keep it happy, think positive thoughts, get stronger, aspire to be the best you can be!

                   *********MESSAGE FOR PARENTS**************

We are starting to become a bit more tech savvy with this online learning journey and we can now upload our own learning and lessons onto Purple Mash as a 2do. This way we can personlise the learning to suit the needs of the children at this point in the school year.

To trial this we have set a writing challenge called Spring Story onto Purple Mash, this challenge can be completed on paper and hand written, we are conscious that most of the writing activities on Purple Mash are typed but it is super important that children still practice their writing skills on paper.

Once the children have completed their story it can be uploaded onto Purple Mash for their teachers to read. It can be uploaded as a document or you can take a picture of it and upload it as a photo (see picture below),

The hand in date is Friday so they can spend all week on this. We will begin to upload more customised lessons in the next few weeks.

We can't wait to read all the amazing stories.

Year 2 Team :-)

This week we are going to remind ourselves about multiplication and trying our best to remember our multiplication facts.

Learning at home week 6-11/5/20-15/5/20

To our Superheroes (The NHS)

Written and performed by Amy Smith

Good Morning and happy Friday, why don't you end the week doing something you really enjoy doing when learning, it could be purple mash (choose any activity that looks fun) or maybe reading in the sunshine, or writing a letter to a family member or friend.

Quite often you will be learning how to do things without even realising you are learning. When you bake you use maths by measuring, when you play in your garden you are using up energy like we do in PE, you might love comics and magazines where you will be reading and using your imagination.

So today, find something you love doing and enjoy the final day of the school week, you will be surprised how much learning you are doing without even knowing it!

Have a great weekend.

Friday maths for you. More opportunities to practice your number line skills when subtracting (taking away).

Thursday 14th May 2020 - Phonics...

A problem solving challenge for maths today. Good luck!

Wednesday 12th May 2020 - Good Morning! We are half way through our week already and it is well-being Wednesday where we focus on being mindful and content.

We have made a lovely mindfulness activity for you to try.

As usual lets start our Wednesday with a singing assembly song...

Don't Worry Be Happy

Still image for this video

Being mindful is all about being aware of your feelings whether they are good or bad, it is how we control them and use them and what we learn from our feeling and experiences which is important.

After you have listened to today's song why don't you make a bubble map of all your feelings, it might be happy feelings, or sad, it might make you excited or nervous. All these feelings are normal, music can make us feel all kinds of emotions.

Once you have created your bubble map why don't you create a picture of that feeling, you can use colouring or paint or maybe just sketch?

Remember, art can be anything you want it to be!

Grammar -

Feeling good and making others feel good is super important! Why not try this feel good challenge, our amazing Miss Sidney created this for you all

Maths today is about continuing to practice our subtraction (taking away) skills.

Tuesday 12th May 2020 - Good Morning Everyone, lets have another productive day of learning...

Phonics -

Phonics PDF

Maths today is practicing subtraction or taking away. In the clip below is a demonstration in using a number line to help solve subtraction equations. It challenges us to use our very important place value skills to help partition numbers into 10s and 1s. Remember to use a ruler when drawing your own number line.

Watch the clip, use the below 100 square and have a go at solving:

1)   100 - 22 =

2)   100 - 32 =

3)   100 - 42 =

4)     90 - 42 =

5)     80 - 55 =

6)     75 - 53 =

There is a reading comprehension for you to do too.

Reading Challenge Day 2 -

The Last Wolf by Mini Grey

A new take on an old classic!

For maths today there are two activity sheets to have a go at below. Remember to try and use strategies from yesterdays video to help find an answer and remember to check your work. If you know both parts then you add them together to find the whole. If you only know one part and the whole then you could subtract the part you know from the whole to find the part you don't yet know!

We have set a spring art challenge on Purple Mash if you feel like getting creative!

Hello all you fabulous Year 2 children! Your teachers have left you little messages on your class pages. We hope you like them!

Maths reminder of some of the ways we teach addition when at school. Watch this first and then solve the equations below.

Use a strategy from the above video to help solve or check your answers to the below number sentences.

34 + 15 =

34 + 25 =

44 + 25 =

54 + 35 =

35 + 64 =

Can you spot a connection with the above number sentences. What's the same? What's different?

Wednesday 28th April 2020 - Good Morning Children, it is Wednesday again and a time to focus on mindfulness.

It is so very important to use mindful activities in our lives, it connects with our resilience too, like chapters of a story coming together to make it complete.

Mindful activities can help us control our emotions and help us release feelings. When we feel a little bit tense and tired from working super hard it helps us focus our attentions on what is important in life.

All you lovely children work incredibly hard and all your teachers know that, but we also know that it is important to look after your mind as well as your body. This goes out to all the parents trying their best with home learning too, you are all amazing and we think you are doing a fantastic job! Make sure you all have time to take a step back and look after yourselves.

Today there will be a phonics and maths lesson but the other uploads are things that we think might help with self love and self care.

Enjoy...

Music is a great way to relieve tension and stress, we are so lucky at Orchard Infants to have the talented Miss Wilson who creates all these awesome, soul tingling singing assembly songs. She even sings herself in some of them! Here is a new one to enjoy...

Try this relaxing yoga lesson from the wonderful Mrs Webb from the Peaches class...lets get our zen on!

It's important to find ways to deal with stress, here are some ideas for you...

Sometimes it is important to remind ourselves why we are awesome, just in case you have forgot, why don't you complete this challenge to remind yourself of why you are amazing!

Tuesday 28th April 2020 - Good Morning and what a wet and soggy day it is!

Don't forget Joe Wicks at 9am, the weather shouldn't stop you getting active...

Hi Children, It's Mrs Carr, Mrs Wojcik and Mrs Hill here, we are missing you all so very much, especially our Tuesday afternoons when we get you all to ourselves!

Reading - We have created a 7 day reading challenge for you, each day we will post the next part of the challenge. Day 1 is all about predictions, we won't post the story until tomorrow so you can make some really good predictions without knowing anything else about the story.

Well children, that is officially the end of our Spring Term and what a roller coaster we have all been on together.

As a school we always talk about the importance of being resilient; never giving up, helping others, determination, positivity, being strong, being brave, keep trying, team work, courage... the list just goes on and on. As a school community we have proved we are all of these things in abundance, it has been a difficult few weeks for everyone but each and every one of you have proved how resilient you really are, and most importantly we know that we will all bounce back from this as stronger and more courageous people.

All your Year 2 teachers have been missing all your faces terribly, but don't worry, i'll let you into a little secret, we all have our class photos on our desks so we can see your faces as we work, it brings a smile to our faces!

It is so important to have some down time where we can just kick back, relax and take some time for ourselves, so make sure you enjoy your Easter break, we will be updating this page with more learning on Monday 20th April.

However, we will post on this page, some exciting activities that you might like to do over Easter. These are optional activities, you might do all of them, you might do some of them or you might do none of them and that's cool too! Take this time to have time for yourselves, do the things that bring you joy!

Keep smiling, stay strong and be safe!

 *IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PARENTS*

You might have seen our post yesterday about creating pictures for the new Nightingale Hospital, unfortunately it seems this was Fake News, we are really disappointed that someone would do such a thing in time of uncertainty and worry.

Thursday 2nd April 2020 - Good Morning!

Phonics - We are learning about the -ful suffix today. Remember, if you find something really tricky you could just be digraph detectives and look for different digraphs in your favourite book?

Today's maths activity is about using the clues from shadow shapes to help reason using what you have already learnt.

Wednesday 1st April 2020 - Good morning all you wonderful children, the sun is shining again today, it always makes us feel more positive!

Mindfulness and well-being is a super important part of our lives, it is so important that we try to keep our bodies and our minds healthy. Today's challenges will be about doing something you love that makes you feel happy inside. It could be something physical or something creative. It might be doing a good deed around your house or maybe its singing or dancing?

We will post some ideas of lovely things that you could do throughout the day, you don't have to do them you might prefer to find your own things to do but as long as it brings you joy and makes you feel happy that's the most important thing.

So, to start our day lets fill our homes with music, a new song for us to sing today...

What a Wonderful World

Mindful Colouring - Why not find somewhere cosy to sit, put some relaxing music on and turn these sheets into colourful masterpieces.

Rainbow Elephants - We saw this idea online and thought it was wonderful! We have created a little step-by-step guide to help you.

***THIS ONE IS FOR ALL THE GROWN UPS AT HOME***

We never like to leave the grown ups out so the wonderful Mrs K, our resident creativity and mindfulness queen, has created something for all you Mum's and Dad's to try... only if you want of course.

We know how challenging and sometimes difficult this time is for you all and we think you are all incredible!

Remember, in a world full of doing, doing, doing! It's important to take moment to just breath, to just be.

This looks cool! You could decorate your bedroom with the bunting and it will make you smile every time you look at it.

Tuesday 31 March 2020 - Good morning everyone, how about some dancing to kick off our Tuesday and to help us get active!

Maths today is further practicing our understanding of 3D shape.

Hello children, Mrs Wojcik here, I hope you are all keeping safe and well. I was thinking about you all today and I remembered how much I miss playing our 'dice story game' that I often played with the Mangoes in the afternoon. Then I had an idea!, we could still do it, even if we can't be together!

Pineapples and Strawberries, you might not have played this before so here are some tips:

1. Look at the pictures on the dice I have rolled, use each picture to tell part of the story.

2. Work through each dice in the order they have been rolled.

3. You can add as much detail as you want in each part of your story.

4. Make it as funny or silly as you like.

Maybe you can write it down and read it to your family to make them all smile, you could even draw pictures and turn it into a book?.

I have added a few different combinations for you to use.

I hope you enjoy

Thursday 26 March 2020 - Good Morning Year 2! Another glorious day outside. I hope you enjoyed your mindfulness day yesterday!

This is for all the grown ups at home to read. As you know reading is far more than just reading words, it's about understanding, comprehension, inference and above all else READING FOR PLEASURE! As you all try to navigate your way around home teaching, we have created some guidance to help you, some 'tricks of the trade' if you like. Hopefully it helps.

We're continuing our work on 2D shape today. There are two challenges so good luck!

You had a go at making your own timeline about your life now lets try and start to make one to help show the important parts of Admiral Horatio Nelson's life.

Some interesting reading about Nelson! There are some questions for you to think about too, or chat with your parents about them. Could this help you with your timeline?

Some great websites!

Wednesday 25 March 2020.

Hello everybody, we hope you are all keeping well and trying your best to enjoy the beautiful weather we are having at the moment! We thought today it would be good if we had a mindfulness activity day to give everybody time to either catch up or even to try different things or try things differently. So after phonics, there are some suggestions below or you could try something else that makes you feel good. Hmm, I wonder if you can find something to do which doesn't use electricity.

Have a go at shadow drawing. Use anything you can find like a favourite toy. You might even spot some 2D shapes in your artwork!

Monday 23rd March 2020. Good morning you amazing Year 2 children. I hope you have had a restful weekend and you are ready for our new online learning journey. I will be posting some daily and weekly lessons here as well as some links for singing assembly and Joe Wicks PE lessons...watch this space...

Lets start the day with some music. We love singing at Orchard Infant School and with the help of the magnificent Ms Wilson we are going to continue to sing! If you find something really tricky after you have tried your best then just put it to one side and move onto something else.

A quick shout out to all the amazing parents at home trying navigate their way through the learning we are posting. Please don't feel you have to do all the challenges in one go, some days there might not be as much as others.
